Purposeful Oracy – Classroom routines to support learning to and through talk

9am – 4pm

A one-day interactive oracy workshop run jointly by Voice 21 and Teaching WalkThrus. Speakers include Tom Sherrington (Teaching WalkThrus), Lisa Worgan (Teaching WalkThrus), Amy Gaunt (Voice 21) and Grace Barron (Voice 21)

The day includes three sessions where all the ideas will be brought to life through practical oracy activities.

Agenda:

9am – arrival and refreshments

9.30am Session 1: Our guiding principles.

· The simple model for learning that informs all the WalkThrus and how this relates to oracy

· The V21 Oracy Framework and Benchmarks

· The importance of purposeful oracy in the classroom

Coffee break

11.30am Session 2: Mode A Oracy - in every lesson

· Common activities and techniques for oracy - pair talk, questioning and class discussion.

· How oracy is effectively developed through WalkThrus technique and the V21 approaches.

· When and how can each strand in the oracy framework be developed explicitly as a routine part of everyday teaching?

Lunch break

2pm Session 3: Mode B Oracy - across the curriculum

Using the Mode B concept from WalkThrus, we will look at how activities such as giving presentations, speeches and debating can be woven into the fabric of an oracy-rich curriculum, building on strong Mode A practices.

3.30pm Q&A, closing remarks
