DESIGN YOUR PROGRAMME.

Our toolkit will help you to consider the key design decisions needed to create a successful professional learning programme.  We have broken this down to six key decisions. WalkThrus will help you tackle each one in turn.

ONE

TEAMS, PEOPLE.

Is your programme based on individual instructional coaching or teachers working in pairs or triads? Is it mainly driven through your existing subject or year teams or even the whole staff coming together regularly? WalkThrus resources support you, whichever model you feel is best for your context.

TWO

TEACHING & LEARNING FOCUS.

What teaching and learning problems are you trying to solve? These might be specific to individuals, certain subjects or common to a whole school. Our cluster-builder  and problem-solution tools will help you to identify the combination of teaching techniques you need to tackle the problems you want to solve, helping you to focus on key areas of practice to secure lasting change. Each technique has a clear rationale rooted in the model of learning promoted throughout our materials.

THREE

TIME STRUCTURE.

A key task for leaders is to map out your CPD cycles across your organisation’s calendar so that teachers can see clear timeframes to support their goal-setting.  We recommend cycles that repeat every 2-4 weeks, giving teachers time to practise whilst also generating momentum in the improvement process.

FOUR

TRAINING INPUTS.

A central feature of most effective professional learning programmes is high quality training inputs, linked to the ongoing coaching processes. Our toolkit has all you need to deliver superb training, helping your own training staff to model techniques and build teacher knowledge. This includes slides, videos, trainer notes and a range of teacher workbooks linked to each technique.

FIVE

COACHING PROCESS.

We recognise that there are multiple forms of coaching that can be effective with individuals, small groups and teams. WalkThrus will support you to develop the right process for your organisation, with sample videos, structured guidance sheets and plenty of background information based on our fieldwork. We’re particularly keen to promote the Bambrick-Santoyo ‘5 Ps’ process which works incredibly well as a framework in multiple contexts.

SIX

REALITY CHECK.

An important element of teacher development is the role of feedback. Teachers are not always best placed to evaluate their own practice objectively and it is important to design routines that allow teachers to gain a reality check on how things are going in their lessons. As well as providing teachers with a superb self-reflection tool, WalkThrus will support you to explore a range of observation processes that feed into your ongoing CPD and coaching cycles, linked to specific techniques.

THE 5 Es IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS.

Beyond the six design decisions that get your started, our 5 Es help you to think through how to embed excellent professional learning for the long term.

In year one, you Engage staff, launching the process and getting started. Then you Explore the techniques throughout the year acting on the six key design decisions. It’s important to then Evaluate your processes making changes to the key decisions before moving on.

In year two, you Extend your programme, incorporating more elements before, finally, you can Embed it, supporting new and experienced colleagues on their CPD journey.
